Scoring
Score is a live count of face-up monsters in the main zone. The player with the most wins.
What Counts
- Only monster cards that are active (face-up) and in the 5×5 main zone count.
- The card must be flipped toward you to count as your point.
What Does Not Count
- Block cards — they occupy cells but do not contribute to score.
- Covered (face-down) cards of any type.
- Cards in the out zone, regardless of facing.
- Cards in the graveyard or removed from game.
Maximum Score
The theoretical maximum is 25 — all 25 main zone cells occupied by your face-up monsters. In practice scores are much lower, as both players share the board. Both players start at 0 and score updates after every turn.
When the Game Ends
The game ends immediately when all 25 cells of the main zone are occupied — by any card of any type, including covered cards. As soon as the last empty cell is filled, the game stops regardless of what is still in hand or pending.
Score is then calculated from the current board state: count each player's face-up monster cards in the main zone. Covered cards and block cards are ignored.
The game also ends if a player cannot draw a card at the start of their turn (empty deck). Score is calculated immediately from the current board.
Winning and Tying
The player with the higher score wins. Equal scores result in a draw.
Key implication: Covered cards fill cells without contributing to score. A player can cover the last empty cell to end the game while their opponent has more points — but equally, covering cells can end the game prematurely in your own favor if your face-up monster count is already ahead. Managing when the board fills is a strategic layer.
