Block

A non-elemental arrow ability. Place a block card from your hand onto an empty target cell, or remove a block already there.

Non-elemental

Block is not tied to a specific element. Any card can carry this arrow ability. Not to be confused with the Block card type. See Arrows for how ability arrows work.

How it Works

The Block ability interacts exclusively with Block cards — the utility card type that has no stats, no arrows, and no cost in Set 00. When you trigger a Block ability arrow, two things can happen depending on what is on the target cell:

  • If the target cell is empty, place a Block card from your hand onto it.
  • If the target cell contains a Block card, that block is removed to the graveyard.

This dual function makes the Block ability a tool for both placement and removal.

Empty target cell: place a block (left). Target with a block: remove it (right).
Empty target cell: place a block (left). Target with a block: remove it (right).

Rules

  • If the target cell is empty: take a Block card from your hand and place it on the target cell. You must have a Block card in hand to do this.
  • If the target cell contains a Block card: that block is removed and sent to the graveyard. You do not need a Block card in hand for removal.
  • The Block ability cannot target monster cards. If the target cell contains a monster (active or covered), the Block ability has no effect.
  • Block cards placed by this ability are placed face-up (active).
  • Block cards do not have arrows and cannot use abilities. They are purely positional.

Block Cards on the Board

Block cards do not count toward score — even when face-up in the main zone. They occupy cells and can end the game when the board fills, but they contribute zero points. An opponent can remove them with the Block ability. They cannot be conflicted, and they cannot flip opponents.

Block cards also interact with the Color Synergy rule (currently Testing): a Block card provides +1 ATK/+1 DEF to adjacent same-element friendly Creatures.

Block cards placed in the out zone do not count toward score but can be used for positioning. They can be removed by the Block ability from that position as well.

Interactions

Blocking arrows

A Block card in the path of an opponent's arrow prevents that arrow from reaching cells behind it. Positioning blocks strategically can protect your high-value monsters from Firestorm damage or disrupt an opponent's arrow lines.

Cell bonus denial

Placing a block in the last empty cell of a row or column your opponent needs can deny their cell bonus. Blocks fill cells without scoring — this asymmetry is a core strategic tool.

Hand management

Block cards occupy hand slots. Running many blocks in your deck means more hands with blocks taking space, unless a Block ability can deploy them quickly. This is a natural cost that deck builders must weigh.

Strategic note: The Block ability's dual function means a single arrow slot serves both offense and defense: place blocks to score or protect, remove opponent blocks to deny their score or expose their positions. If the Color Synergy rule is adopted, blocks of the right element become active support pieces — making the Block ability critical for managing that layer as well.
